It’s the biggest day on the nation’s calendar, and being in the Perth catering biz, we’re not ones to hold back on a celebration.

If it’s your turn to host the annual Australia Day shindig, don’t lose sweat on it. Here’s our top tips and some inspiration to take your average sausage sizzler next level.

1. Put it on the menu

Aside from great company, it’s the tucker that matters. For us, it’s all about meat pies. It would be un-Australian otherwise right?! And where else can you get the nation’s best meat pies but right here at your local Pinjarra Bakery. Be sure to try our latest Australia Day inspired invention pie – any guesses what it could be?

We’re taking our love of Aussie icons to a tasty new level with our special limited edition BEEF CHEESE & VEGEMITE invention pie! Of course we’re not suggesting that’s all you eat on Straya Day, so make yourself a shopping list of all the Aussie essentials you’ll need for your catering and start prepping.

Fire up the barbie with some lamb and seafood and you’re onto a sure winner. Our favourite recipes to bust out for our hungry crowd include coconut, lime and chilli barbecued prawns and our no fail spicy barbecued leg of lamb. Give your snags the ultimate boost with beer infused caramelised onions (trust me you’ll never look back). And to cover off the sweet tooth you gotta stick with the classics – lamington and pavlova.

Of course don’t take it all upon yourself. Ask your guests to bring a plate to take some of the pressure off your hands.

2. Get creative with your bevvies

Fill up your esky with local brew (forego the Coronas for one day pleaseee!) and then prepare a few chilled jugs of the refreshing kind to share.

A little bit of your favourite cider, Campari and Rosé and you’ve got the Australiano! Or, why not take Matt Preston’s advice and give his watermelon spritz a go.

Lastly, don’t forget the kids. This non-alcoholic Australia Day punch should keep them happy.

3. Pump the party tunes

Triple J hasn’t broadcast the Hottest 100 on Australia Day for a couple of years now (still devo), but they keep on keeping it real spinning homegrown music all day long on 26 Jan. That’s your playlist sorted – so no debating about what to play anymore.

4. Prepare the pitch

No matter where you’re hosting, it wouldn’t be Australia Day without a game of backyard cricket. Get your zinc on and rally the teams for an impromptu match once the rivalry kicks in.

5. Dress it up

It’s Oz Day mate so go nuts on the paraphernalia – you won’t have any problems sourcing it. And if you really want to get into the spirit, why not ask your guests to come dressed as an Australian icon or celebrity? You gotta love a bit of Kath and Kim!

All set?

If it all seems too much to pull off this long weekend and you need an extra hand, the Pinjarra Bakery crew are here to sort out all your finger food catering in Perth.

However you choose to celebrate your Straya Day this year, we hope you have a mighty good one. Cheers mate!
